SHIPWRECKS, CAVES & CRYSTAL BLUE WATERS

Summer isn't complete without a trip to Tobermory. That's why my family packed our tents and sleeping bags, and headed up to the Bruce Peninsula for a camping trip.
Tobermory holds a special place in my heart, and has become my home away from home. For as long as I can remember, my family has visited the beautiful harbour village every summer. Of course, I had to pull out some classic photos for this special post:

This summer we were fortunate enough to have Adam and Meghan come along for the trip! On our first day we visited Big Tub Lighthouse and Singing Sands. Singing sands is a beach that's essentially a giant sand bank. You can walk out from shore for at least half a mile before the water passes your waist. A bonus is that this beach feels like bath water because it's so shallow. At night we headed up a lookout tower for sunset. After trying to think of where to best catch the sunset, Adam had the genius idea of climbing the tower, and it didn't disappoint. Our second day was filled with rain, rain and more rain. Meghan, Adam and I braved the weather and rode across the Georgian Bay to Flowerpot Island. If you visit Tobermory, Flowerpot is a must-see. The island has beautiful geological formations, caves, and trails. You even get to see two shipwrecks on the way over! We spent the evening around the campfire, until more rain hit. We huddled underneath a tent and tarp set-up and played Apples to Apples for hours. On day three we ventured to a new trail, Halfway Log Dump. It's just down the beach from the popular Grotto, but with half the people. We explored, climbed rocks, swam, and had a blast trying out our waterproof disposable camera. We finished our trip walking through downtown Tobermory, which is around Little Tub Harbour. As expected, Tobermory didn't disappoint, and we left exhausted from all of the fun we had.

Over the last year many people have asked me about Tobermory and what there is to do there. So, I figured I would add a list of things you can do if you ever want to visit.

  • Little Tub Bakery - you will drive into town on Highway 6. When you're heading towards Tobermory, it's on your left. It has amazing cinnamon buns and jams that you should check out. Fun fact: once a bear broke into the bakery and the owners found it sitting on the freezer eating their delicious food.
  • Downtown Tobermory - set around a beautiful harbour, filled with the cutest shops with unique souvenirs and food.
  • The Grotto & Halfway Log Dump - the Grotto is well-known and busy, but both beaches have amazing crystal blue water, caves and rocks. It is probably the best area to swim in.
  • Singing Sands - as mentioned, a giant sandbank.
  • Flowerpot Island - take the Blue Heron Cruise line that INCLUDES a shipwreck tour. It will take you over two ships that sunk in Big Tub Harbour before taking you to the island. Once on the island, I would walk all the way to the lighthouse on the other end of the island.
  • MS Chi-Cheemaun - take the ferry over to Manitoulin Island. It departs from downtown.
  • Diving - if you know how, there are multiple shops and companies that you can dive with. Meghan is a veteran diver and even did a shipwreck dive once!
  • Lookout Tower - at the information centre on your right as you're heading into town, there's a lookout tower with a great view of town, the Bruce Peninsula, and Georgian Bay.
  • Cameron Lake or Emmett Lake - both the perfect spot for kayaking. I believe Cameron Lake even has their own rental shop.
